This Knowles collector plate brings a romantic, theatrical presence to shelves or wall displays with its detailed color illustration inspired by South Pacific.
Produced by the Edwin M. Knowles China Company, this 1987 issue is the first plate in the South Pacific series painted by Elaine Gignilliat. The series holds a unique distinction as the first collector‑plate series officially authorized by the estates of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, commemorating their acclaimed 1949 musical South Pacific, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Gignilliat’s artwork captures the atmosphere of the musical’s signature ballad through soft color, expressive posture, and precise transfer illustration. Numbered 1509A, it offers a display‑ready tribute to one of Broadway’s most enduring works.
