Das Kunstwerk mit dem Titel The Unexpected Proposal ist die erste Ausgabe der Serie Rockwell’s Colonials: The Rarest Rockwells und fängt die ausdrucksstarken Charakterstudien und die sanfte Erzählweise ein, die Rockwells späteres Illustrationswerk prägten. Produziert von der Edwin M. Knowles China Company im Jahr 1986, wurde dieser Teller als limitierte Auflage mit einer Brenndauer von 150 Tagen herausgegeben. Knowles war weithin bekannt für sein hochwertiges amerikanisches Porzellan, und seine Zusammenarbeit mit der Rockwell Society trug dazu bei, diese Teller als dauerhafte Sammlerstücke zu etablieren.
